I’m always fascinated by the fact that almost 80 percent of the letters in red (Jesus’ words) came as a result of simple one-on-one conversations with the Master. Just imagine with me what would have happened if…if the disciples had NOT asked Jesus, those questions. It would have been absolutely possible that we may not have had some of the important revelations from the very mouth of God!
Last night, I started reading the gospel of Mark. The first chapter starts with the calling of the disciples.
“Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” Mark 1:17,18.
“When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.” Mark 1:19,20
I’ve always wondered How someone could just leave ‘everything’ and follow Jesus, just by a simple two words – ‘Follow Me’. It seemed impossible.
Within my heart arose this question… “How…just HOW could they just leave everything and follow someone whom they barely even know!” I’m fairly sure that you have had the same question just like I did. I mused within my heart and kept raising this question…”Lord, How could they… Or How did they know that this was NOT an ordinary voice calling them?”
I finished my quiet time with the Lord and headed to bed, the question still lingering in my mind.
The next morning, as we were all down with seasonal allergies, we couldn’t go to church. We woke up very late and I played a sermon from YT to kickstart our Sunday.
One of the revelations spoke right to me, and I knew THAT was my answer.
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.” Matthew 16:17
The pastor went on to explain how “The Father keeps working on the hearts of people all throughout their lives, to draw them to Christ at the appointed time.”
All throughout our lives, God keeps working on our hearts to draw us to Him. And when the time is right, man responds to the call without the slightest doubt.
It has been so true in my life as well. If I look back at my own life, I can accurately point to specific ‘moments’ when God planted specific seeds in my heart.
When I was about 4 or 5, I remember asking questions to my grandma about the ‘end of age’ and what will happen to the earth in the end and so on and so forth. Needless to say, my pattima (grandma) brushed aside my questions convinced that a 4 year old doesn’t need a Bible Study on the ‘book of Revelation’!! (It’s absolutely astounding to me that after almost 35 years, the ‘book of Revelation’ is one of my absolute favorite books to study!!!)
When I was 10 or 11, I remember my Sunday school Head Teacher, gave us a brief talk about the ‘Five wounds of Jesus’. I can still recollect it fairly accurately although it was about 30 years ago!!
This one is kinda funny, but I still stand in awe of the magnificence of God’s work in our hearts!
The Vice Principal of my school gave the school children, the ‘thought for the day’ during our morning assembly. She spoke about the “Will of God”. I was in Grade 8 then. She taught us that we must always do what God wants us to do and be SUBMITTED to his will. This word stuck to me really strong that day.
That evening or maybe that weekend, we had a small little gathering of close family members in our home. One of my dear aunts asked me, what I wanted to become when I got older.. Guess what I said! Like a saintly grandma, I shot back…” I want to do God’s will…” I was rather disrespectful, I must confess! Boy! Did I get reprimanded by my Mom! I dare didn’t open my mouth about God’s will after that!! 😂😂
But that word, “that we must be submitted to His Will” was a seed that God placed within my heart, without even my own knowledge, back in Grade 8!!
Besides these, I could go back and specifically point out times in my life when God was drawing me to Himself. And when the time was right, I just leaped up, dusted off my dirt and jumped right into the arms of Jesus! There was simply no doubting!
Perhaps it was the same with the disciples as well. They were prepared all along by God, right from when they were little. And when ‘the Call came’, they just left everything and rose up to FOLLOW!
Can you recall God’s work in your heart, from the time when you were little? I’m sure you will see several ‘moments of significance’ too!!
Also, ANY questions you may have, JUST ask JESUS. It wont be too long before you receive an answer! ❤️
