The book of Chronicles is usually considered boring, but I’m currently doing the book of chronicles…. and….. I am indeed enthralled by the life stories that are recorded in great detail!!! It is all written from God’s point of view. It is NOT just recorded facts… rather it describes in great detail as to how God viewed the life of each King. When testifying of some of the Kings, the Word of God says, “…… King did evil in the eyes of the LORD” and when talking about a few other Kings like Jehoshaphat, the Word of God says, “ He sought the LORD diligently” or “ He walked in the ways of His Father David” and so on…… One such life, the life of King Asa, made me ponder…….
“Asa’s last years” is the title of 2 chronicles chapter 16. Chapter 14 starts off with a good testimony about king Asa. “Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God” 2 chronicles 14:2. But during Asa’s last years of life (chapter 16), his focus on God had made a dynamic shift. His heart had shifted from trusting the LORD…. to trusting the strength of men. Big Mistake!!!
In chapter 15, when he was faced with a vast and a mighty army, King Asa diligently sought the LORD and prayed thus: “Lord, we do not know what to do.. ..but our eyes are on you”. In chapter 16, when King Baasha was about to attack Asa, he went and made a treaty with Ben Hadad, King of Aram to escape from the hand of King Baasha!!!! The LORD was watching and he sent word through the prophet:
“At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: “Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when you relied on the Lord, he delivered them into your hand.
For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.” 2 chronicles 16:7-9
On the surface, it doesn’t look all that bad for a King of a nation to seek the help of another nation to strengthen themselves for the battle!!! Well, that’s what Kings with common sense are supposed to do!!! But God was looking just a little beyond!!! What seems ‘right’ to our eyes, may not seem ‘right’ in the eyes of God!!! I leave you with this question. Who is your first consultant????
Is It google/ friend/ mother/ pastor???? Just asking…!!! It may not seem wrong on the surface!!! But it truly reveals where our reliance is!!! If Prayer and seeking God is not our ‘first’ resort, anything else is probably the ‘wrong’ resort!!!
Blessed month of August!!!!
