Are you an auditory or a visual learner?

Back in the day when I did my Management degree, one of the subjects that we had to take was Psychology. It was partly interesting, but for the most part annoying. I loved studying personality types- the Type A, Type B kinda people, the left brain vs Right brain dominant people , and auditory or the visual learners. The annoying part was Freud and all his theories. I did not like his theories as I felt a lot of them were unclean, but HAD to study his theories nevertheless. 😦

Coming back to Personality types. One of the things I remember studying, was the various ways that people learn. People could predominantly be an auditory learner or a visual learner.

I think I’m predominantly a visual learner. Mummy could “tell” me the recipe for Biryani a hundred times and I still wouldn’t get it, but if I ‘see’ her making it just once, I’m good to go.

Abraham is hands down one of my favorite patriarchs of the Bible. I tend to think that maybe Abraham was a visual learner too. God didn’t just tell him, “Your descendants will be many…” but instead he gave him an imagery for him to be able to remember it better. He said “Look at the stars…. Look at the sands of the sea… so shall your descendants be.”

So, Abraham had visual reminders right before his eyes day and night! If he looked down, he saw the sands or if he looked up, he saw the stars. I imagine, every time he saw the sands or the stars, he must have raised his hands toward heaven and thanked God trusting in His faithfulness to keep his Word.

Psalm 8 has a similar imagery too. It compares the creation of the heavens to the creation of man.

Just as how God created the skies, the moon and the stars out of darkness and emptiness, similarly God will add beauty, glory and honor to man’s life which may look dark and without purpose. God is the one who adds beauty to what may look dark and empty!

When I consider Your heavens, the work of your fingers, The moon and the stars which You have ordained, “ Psalm 8:3

What is man that you are mindful of him…. For you have made him ……and you have crowned him with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:5

From Genesis to revelation the scriptures are filled with visual imageries. Even the parables of Jesus, are full of visual imageries.

Why do we need visual reminders?

Because our enemy is like a roaring lion seeking who he may devour. He wants to discourage us and fill our hearts with fear. Take a Quick Look at the media today. What do they have except images which inject fear and trembling into the core of man. Satan is a pro at it.

But when we keep the promises in front of our eyes, and continue to thank him for his faithfulness, we will see the fulfillment of the promises and the goodness of our GREAT GOD in the land of the living.

Maybe we could take a print out of the scriptures that God has spoken to us in our personal time of prayer and keep it in our Bibles! So, every time we SEE the verse, we could be strengthened in faith and give glory to God for his faithfulness just as Abraham did!

He ( Abraham) did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,” Romans 4:20

God gave this idea to the children of Israel in Deuteronomy:

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts……
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” Deut 6:6,9

If there was technology back in the day, I think God would have said, “Print them at Walgreens and keep them before your eyes… and trust me to bring it to pass when the time is ripe.” 🙂

Some of my favorite promises I cling to:

Speak the Words that God has spoken over your life! And He will bring it to pass.

Blessed day!
