A couple of years ago when I was talking to my friend, she casually mentioned about how much her husband understood the Bible, while she understood nothing much. I well recognised myself with that.
Since I was raised in a Christian home, Bible reading was a ‘must’ thing at home, every morning. Before going to school the first thing in the morning, we had to read the Word of God. Don’t tell mummy this okay. But for years……. the only Bible reading that I did was Psalm 23, Psalm 121 and Psalm 91. True. Most of my School years and perhaps even the early bit of college years….. these three Psalms were what I religiously read!!! And as my friend said, I didn’t even attempt Isaiah or Proverbs or Deuteronomy or Exodus, coz I understood nothing at all.
Today it seems like I have wasted all those precious years, just reading these three psalms over and over again! Today I understand the scriptures in a much better way than I did in the yester years. Had I known the Secret……. Had I know the Secret to reading the Word of God effectively, I could have led a much better Christian life in my School and College days.
Something that I have learned:
I was always told to read the Bible but I was never taught ‘HOW’ to read the Bible. My parents lived a life of example to us and taught what seemed best to them. No Complaints. But I really do believe that reading the Scriptures with understanding is key for a transformation of life. And understanding of the Scriptures cannot be brought about by any human….. we need the help of the DIVINE.
I’m sure like me, you may have experienced ‘dry’ times of Bible reading….. when it seems like you are reading just another text book. Those are times when you quickly want to be ‘done’ with the job and get on to your days work. If you have ever felt that way….. ‘just hang in there’. Just a whisper of a call to the Holy Spirit is enough to change those dry times to absolutely refreshing times.
Two days back I woke up earlier than usual and sat up on my bed thinking ‘Now that I’ve got up, What next now’. 🙂 My Bible was next to my bed…. so I reached to read something from the Word of God. The Calender verse for that day was from Luke 1…. so I decided to read Luke 1. But just before I started reading….. I whispered in my heart…. “Sweet Holy Spirit, speak to me”. I began reading…..
It was amazing….. the details that caught my eye and the revelation from the Word!!! I just didn’t feel like putting the Bible away. I had to force myself to stop, coz I had to get Jaden ready for School. But in those 40 minutes, I learned certain things that I have not picked up for ‘Years’. No wonder they call it….. “Sweet hour of Prayer….. sweet hour of Prayer”
Prayer time is man talking to God….. AND God talking to man through His Word. Prayer time does not have to be dry anymore….. just take a few seconds to call JESUS, and He will be right by your side to show you ‘Great and Mighty’ things!!!
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3
I really do believe that we need to not just teach our Children to read the Bible….. but teach them to invite Jesus into their personal prayer time. We will be raising a generation that will be madly in love with Jesus. JESUS… Oh What a Wonderful Friend is He!!!
Jaden reading his Bible. And yes…. I must teach him proper posture too…. 🙂
Have a Fabulous February!!!
